Question Linux

Hello!

I'm planning to install linux, but when i go to linux.org, it gives me thousands of different versions.

Can anyone tell me what version that is the most used, or what you like best, and why?

If you wanna know what i'll use it for and some info, here ya go:
  • Graphics (Gimp/Gimpshop)
  • Internet (Mozilla Firefox)
  • School (Open Office)
  • Testing
I have a Windows PC, and i want to be able to select OS at startup.

Thank you very much!!

I kinda like Ubuntu, it's fast and pretty compatible. But best of all, it's free. I have like 50 Ubuntu cd's here (they send you cd's for free)

I just started 3-4 days ago its pretty awsome . ubuntu is pretty new user friendly and a new realease is going to be out tommorow. Make sure you have good hardware(no not new just working) becuase I tried linux on a system (it has something wrong I know the motherboard burned out already too) and I always got broken systems. If you can get it to install a perfect system then ha
ve fun its pretty fun (heck Im typing this in ubuntu right now hehe).Cheers have fun.

GRUB and LILO are boot managers, which is exactly what you need. Just install either one of them (I'd suggest GRUB) and make sure the systems you want to be able to boot are on the list.

Can I keep Windows?

Certainly. As long as you've installed Windows first, Linux can be installed into free space on the hard drive. Then the machine can be booted either with Windows or with Linux, depending on your needs at that moment. This method is called dual booting. This is possible through the use of bootloaders that come with most Linux distributions. The most popular bootloaders are Lilo and Grub. The only difficulty involved here is that you normally need to re-partition your hard disk. This can be achieved fairly easily with repartitioning tools. If you're coming from the Windows world, the most popular of these is Partition Magic.

WHAT & HOW to install...
